Remembering Kelly

T he first time I met Kelly Goldberg, she was sitting cross legged on a table hawking copies of SKATING ON THE EDGE at the first Fantasm convention in Atlanta. She had a cup of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other. She fit right in with the rest of the folks there. It didn’t matter if they were guests or fans, she was able to connect with them all. We were on several panels together ranging from “Modern Horror Trends” to “Joseph Campbell’s Myths” and her knowledge of topics was exceptional.

In the real world Kelly liked to travel and wrote for travel magazines and tour agencies. She had a Master's Degree in Social work and was a clinical psychologist. She also loved NASCAR. All of her interests found their way into her writing. Some of her finest horror stories come from places she had visited. She once said that no matter how realistic the writing could be, real life and experiences could never compare.

In addition to SKATING ON THE EDGE, her other novel was DOOMED TO REPEAT IT. She also wrote NASCAR FOR THE ROOKIE FANS and had stories in MORE MONSTERS FROM MEMPHIS and CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE ROMANTIC SOUL as well as stories in Anotherealm and the Extremes series from Lone Wolf Press. She was a member of SFWA, HWA and the International Association of Food, Wine and Travel Writers.

Kelly was an exceptional person who enjoyed life. She may be gone but for those who knew her, and thanks to The dgk goldberg Horror Award and Anotherealm, she will always be remembered. Sometimes a person comes into your life and even if it is for a short time, they find a place in your heart. That was Kelly. If you aren’t familiar with her work, find it and read it. She was one of a kind.
