The 2000 Presidential Election

by Ruth V. Horwitz © 2003

Broken chads in Florida, outrage across America, Peter Jennings announcing too early that Al Gore won the state of Florida, all ingredients for mayhem and chaos. The Supreme Court orders the recount of thousands of ballots in Florida only to abruptly stop the recount without notice. Sounds like good ole "W" had a nice bribe to offer, doesn't it? The Supreme Court has now become The God of the United States Election process, a process that has our Founding Father's spinning in their graves.

George W. Bush is so convinced that the Supreme Court will vote in his favor that he announces that he and First Lady Laura Bush are ready to occupy the White House. What an ego this guy has! But alas, the Supreme Court votes to give the Presidency to Al Gore instead! Democrats go wild, Republicans go suicidal. The controversy just doesn't seem to end. The global community waited with baited breath for this vote and now wonders the impact it will have on international relations.

Al Gore is sworn into the White House and one of the first things he proposes to Congress is to end all travel restrictions and embargo's in Cuba. The vote passes the Senate and House without a problem. Thousands of Americans flock to Cuba to enjoy the warm climate and the good cigars. However, thousands of other Americans, namely residents of Little Havana in Miami, form their own coalition. They plot and strategize to free their relatives of this communist regime in hopes of a better life for all islanders and especially to free the political prisoners.

The coup is successful and Castro is overthrown by the people and by his own military. Freedom of press, freedom of speech, freedom of capital enterprise, freedom, freedom, freedom! The Cubans are overjoyed after decades of depression and famine. The whole global community thanks President Gore for starting the process of world peace. He travels the world to open communications with dictators, kings and prime ministers. He hosts conferences at home for visiting dignitaries. He preaches the virtues of living in a world with no conflict, no revenge, no hatred, no starvation, no discrimination. He vows the United States will give financial aid to any country willing to come forward and embrace change. Half way into his presidency, the rumblings of change begin to appear.

India and Pakistan develop dialogue, China improves it's human right's agenda, North Korea dismantles it's nuclear proliferation program. Israel and Palestine sign a peace accord. The British and the Irish disarm. Venezuela elects a democratic leader and ends the violence that surfaced for so long. Caucasians and African-Americans in all of Africa unite. Russians learn to trust. Vietnam follows suit with Cuba and returns all of the country to a democratic state. Famine worldwide is eliminated. Saddam Hussein is assassinated and Iraqi's celebrate. Kuwaiti's no longer fear invasion and the price of oil falls. Osama bin Laden is found, tortured by his own people and killed. The Mexican police are no longer corrupt. A cure for cancer and aid's is found. Homelessness is a thing of the past. The United States economy begins to rebound. Millions of Americans are now employed once again. The international community lauds President Gore on his ruthless, tireless campaign to end the plight of all those that are suffering the ills of war, communism and dictatorship. True peace on earth and goodwill to men is now a reality.
